Party and Barbecue at the Castor's Home was Fantastic!!!
Thanks to Robert and Valerie Castor for once again lending their home to the tennis team for a great end-of-year party. Fun was had by all, and the Boosters provided great food as usual (thanks Leeanne!!). We are sad and happy to see our 5 seniors graduate this year--Jacob, Jason, Nick, Jenny, and Lindsay!! Way to go group, and thanks for giving us some great years of tennis! You will be missed! The good news is that we finished the year with 38 active underclassmen who should return for next year! Way to go, Dawgs!! Keep working over the summer!!
Jason, Jacob, and Paige honored at CATA Banquet!!Three of our top players were honored Sunday, April 29th, at the annual CATA banquet for their performance on the court this year. Jason received the "Male player of the Year" award from Circle C Tennis Academy. Jacob and Paige received the respective "Player of the Year" awards for Bowie High School. Paige could not attend, so we can't show her smiling face here, but we still congratulate her on her great year.
Both Jason and Jacob plan to play in college next year. Jacob will be attending St. Edwards University in Austin on scholarship, and Jason intends to "walk-on" at Rochester Technical Institute in New York. We wish them both the best of luck, and our deepest thanks for lending their talents to the Bowie Tennis team! You will be missed next year, guys, but we know you will go on to do great things! The team gets to keep Paige for one more year! |
Paige and Jacob to be celebrated at CATA Banquet Sunday!
Paige Johnson and Jacob Belanger will be celebrated at the Capitol Area Tennis Association Banquet on Sunday, April 29th, at the Red Lion Hotel. Paige and Jacob were nominated as the year's outstanding tennis players for Bowie High School, and will be recognized for their leadership and play among all the top players from other central Texas schools who will attend. Each school can nominate one boy and one girl as honorees. Way to go, Paige and Jacob!
Paige Johnson fights hard in Waco Regional!!
Paige and her team-mates were enthusiastic as they headed up to Regionals in Waco to watch Paige try her chances at the State Tournament. Along the way, however, she had to get by the #1 seed in the state--Makenna Maddox of McKinney Boyd--who went to State last year also. Paige gave it her best, and took Maddox to duece several times, but could not push over a game to get things going. Maddox won this match, and the next two thru the semi's dropping only 3 games total--so she was a tough customer. But Paige got her first taste of Region and will not sit on her laurels waiting for next year. We are very proud of you, Paige!
Varsity District Tournament Concludes -- Paige Johnson going to Waco!!!
Congratulations to Jason Alexander and Paige Johnson, who both advanced to the District 15-5A singles Championships today with stellar play at UT Intramural Courts. Makenna Parker finished the season with a 4th place trophy in District, after suffering a match ending injury. She will recover and continue to do great things! Jason managed to finish in 3rd place on Wednesday, after playing a 2 hour match and splitting sets with his Westlake opponent. But Paige Johnson rolled over all but one opponent to finish in SECOND PLACE, and advances to Regionals in Waco on April 16th. Paige plays at 9am on Tuesday, April 17th, at the Waco Regional Tennis Center!! GO Paige!!! Go Dawgs!!!--Coach G
JV Team Rolls at District Tournament!!!
The mighty Bowie JV Tennis Team rolled over many seasoned opponents in the 2012 District Tournament for JV. Leading the way in boys Singles was Will Douglass, who won it all by defeating Jack Mahler from Anderson in the championship match 7-5 and 6-3. Way to go Will, and what a great year for him!! Daniela Griffis and Julieann Lu matched Will by bringing home the girls championship medals, defeating an Anderson team in split sets in the final, 4-6 6-3 (10-4). This was an exciting match that showed the grit and determination of the Bowie players. Way to go, ladies!!!
In other action, Summer Davis also brought home the 4th place medal in girls singles. Summer was down 6-1 in her final match and stormed back to gain a tie-breaker, only to lose by the slimmest of margins, 9-8 (7-2). This was not the only long match Summer played, and she showed a lot of will power in a full draw. In girls doubles, Bowie also won the 3rd place medals with the brand new team of Iliana Buzan and Anastasia Kulikova, who won their final match 6-3 and 6-1. The mixed team of Raj Patel and Mackenzie Salter also took home the 3rd place bronze with 4 tough matches, losing only to a couple of teams from Westlake, while beating everyone else! Sarah Martin also won her first match of the day and made it to the quarterfinals, before narrowly losing out to Anderson, 8-6.
This tournament concludes the regular season for the Bulldawg JV tennis players, but we are considering a tournament for Bowie players only starting next week, probably on Wednesday. This was a great finish to a great year, and more good things await the Dawgs for next year!!

Dawg's JV excels at Bowie JV Invitational!
The Bulldawg JV Tennis team did a great
job at our own tournament on Tuesday, winning numerous medals and having a lot
of fun doing it. The Dawgs won 3 out of 4 of the top singles medals, taking
first place in boys A and B divisions and first in girls A division. Leading
the way were Will Douglass (A), Alec Gorden (B), and Daniela Griffis (A). This
was a great performance against the Austin High and Lake Travis teams,
especially since Lake Travis was 2nd in the State of Texas last year in 4A.
Mackenzie Salter also made it to the semi-finals in B-singles, losing only
to the eventual champion from LT. But in consolation there was no one who could
stop her, and she won it all on that side! Stephen Harms gave it his best in
boys A-singles, and made it to the semi-s also, where he lost to a strong LT
player in a squeaker--9 to 7.
In girls doubles action, the Bowie A-girls team of Laura Phillips and
Julieann Lu made it all the way to the finals, where they narrowly lost to LT by
the score of 8-5, and took home the siver medals for their hard work. Also in
A-doubles, two Bowie teams slugged it out for the consolation final, with Iliana
Buzan and Tara Kubsch defeating their team-mates Jolie Nguyen and Naomi Sims by
the narrow score of 8-6. And playing in their first match ever together, the
freshmen team of Sarah Del Puerto and Laquida Hamilton defeated a Lake Travis
team in B-doubles to make it to the semi's, only to fall to another LT team who
became the eventual champion. Another freshman team of Aditi Sharma and
Mackenzie Salter lost their first match, but would not lose again and brought
home the consolation medals in B-doubles! Way to go Ladies!
Shahriyar Huq and Prakash Lu also gave it
their best in A-doubles and made it to the semi's, but fell to another strong LT
team by the score of 8-4. The freshmen team of Shyam Sharma and Kreg Frels beat
Austin High to make it to the finals of consolation in B-doubles, but barely
lost to a good Lake Travis team there by the score of 8-5. Rounding out the
medal count were Travis David and Raj Patel, who defeated two strong teams in
B-doubles from Austin High and LT to make it to the finals, where they ran out
of steam, but still brought home the silver. Everyone who played gave it their
all and did Bowie proud. Way to go guys!
Congratulations to all the players, and thanks to all the parents who came
in support. Special thanks go to the David's for bringing coffee to the
coaches, pizza to the team, and their all-day long appreciation of our
players! Thanks also to Lori Frels for bringing lots of Gatorade!

IMPORTANT!!: If you are in the tennis class, I expect you to put it before all other after-school activities, including drama and other sports. If you plan to miss tennis for rehearsals and other sports, you need to drop the class. You may still come hit with the team--but not for credit!!
Keep working on your running times. I have decided not to cut people for slow times in the mile, however until you reach an 8 minute mile, you will be expected to run and work on it some during team-time! Spring tennis will begin with time-trials for a 1 mile run. Students who expect to compete must be able to run an 8 minute mile (8 minute 30 sec for girls), so be sure you can do this before January 15th. We will practice this some in class. The Bull-Dawgie team will also be cut to the top 8 players for both boys and girls, so you have until then to challenge and earn your place!!! Spring drills and class begin on Wednesday, January 18th. The first Varsity tournament will be at the end of January in Georgetown. This is a great time of year to work on doubles-communication with a partner, practice your serve, and do some running! My expectations are:
All players are expected to come to practice with appropriate clothing, equipment, and water/Gatorade type drinks. Jeans are never appropriate clothing! Please help me watch out for “woozy” players who may be suffering from heat exhaustion. You are expected to take care of yourselves and your team-mates at all times—so don’t overdo it in the heat, and take breaks when you need it. All players are expected to conduct themselves with honor and respect toward their team-mates and opponents. If you use the Golden Rule at all times you will be fine.
Remember that when a line-judge is present, you will continue to make all calls unless either player asks for a ruling—then that ruling is final.DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE (friends, parents, or strangers) to “help” you with line-calls, scoring, or coaching. Only your coach may talk to you during a match at change-overs. Stop the match and get my attention if you witness illegal coaching or line-calling.I will deal with it. If you or your opponent is confused about scoring, you should approach the net after the point and ask them to confer with you. Work backward until you find a point/play that you both agree on, then work forward remembering each point. No one, including your coaches, may help with scoring disagreements. If you discover a point that you cannot agree what happened, then you may replay ONLY that point. All other points before and after must stand as played. Last but not least, Tennis should be fun! I expect you to have as much fun as possible, to work hard, do your best, and hopefully to win some matches. If you play hard and with honor, you will always be able to hold your head up high. Ultimately, you are playing to create special moments in your life that you will always remember because of the special effort that you put forth. When you put forth special effort, you are guaranteed to remember that moment—WIN or LOSE!!!At these times, you will remember the expressions on your friends’ faces, the breeze on your skin, and the feeling you have inside. All the gold in the world cannot buy this feeling! GO DAWGS!!!--Coach Ernie Grimes PS—I prefer to be contacted at bulldawgstennis@yahoo.com unless it is an immediate need, then you can call or text my cell at 512-698-1981. |
